The Insufferable Whiteness of Being
Single-channel video, 12:30 runtime, 2018.
In collaboration with Emily Martinez as Anxious to Make.
Description
As crypto-rich investors relocate to Puerto Rico to build a new crypto-utopia called “Sol,” The Insufferable Whiteness of Being considers their utopian vision within the larger historical context of colonialism and exploitation on the island. The video combines text drawn from online, comment-thread arguments about the island’s future with images of Puerto Rico from Western art history, travel and tourism videos, U.S. military training documentation, luxury real estate tours, and post-Hurricane Maria drone footage.
